Villanova, Pa.- Villanova was down three goals at the start of the second half but fought back scoring two in the final two minutes to force overtime against the UConn Huskies. Alexa Tsahalis picked of a pass at midfield just under a minute and a half into overtime. She passed it to Brittany Bruno break away and score the game winner to make the final 13-12.
Caroline Curnal started the game off with the opening goal to put Villanova up 1-0. UConn then answered with three straight goals before Tsahalis netted her first of the day to bring it within one. The Huskie used another three goal run to go up 6-2 midway through the half. Libby McKenna scored first goal of the game but the Huskies offense was able to score two more to go up five, there largest lead of the game.
It was the seniors on senior day would bring Villanova back into the game before halftime. Bruno scored her first goal on a dish from Katie Comerford then returned the favor setting up Comerford to bring Villanova within three. UConn was able to get one just over a minute before halftime but Villanova was able to score in the final seconds when Comerford assisted Bruno to make it 9-6 UConn heading into the locker rooms.
Villanova’s defense clicked in the second half limiting the Huskies to just three goals on 10 shots taken. Mary Alice Collins, who came into goal midway through the first half had three saves in the second half and finished with six overall while picking up her second career win.
The Huskies first goal came just over a minute in to put them back up four. The Wildcats would answer scoring back-to-back goals, first McKenna netted an unassisted goal followed by Comerford scoring on a pass from Curnal to bring it within two 15:00 minute in. UConn got a goal just seconds later to go back up but Villanova’s offense again answered with two straight goals. Olivia Piccirilli scored the first followed by Tsahalis to make it a one goal game. UConn got their final goal of the game at 9:13 to give them a two goal led with 9:13 left to play.
It was the seniors on offense who helped secure the win over the final two minutes of regulation. Comerford got a pass inside to Haley Driscoll who was able to pop it into the back of the net to make it a one goal game. With 34 seconds to go in regulation it was Bruno who dished it to Comerford to tie the game at 12 at force overtime.
In overtime the Huskies had two turnovers and Villanova was able to capitalize when Tsahalis was able to pick off the pass at midfield. She then sent the ball forward to Bruno who was able to break away and go one on one with the goalkeeper and get her shot to fall into the back of the net to make the final 13-12.
Prior to the game the team honored their six seniors during a senior day ceremony. The senior honored were Brittany Bruno, Katie Comerford, Haley Driscoll, Kelsey Mentzer, Julianne Puckette, and Liz Trojan.
Villanova will head to Denver to play in the final regular season weekend against the Pioneers. First draw on Friday, April 23rd and Sunday April 25th will be at 3:00 P.M. ET/1:00 P.M ET.
