Philadelphia, Pa. – The Villanova Wildcats (4-5) traveled to Howarth Field to face the Temple Owls (6-2) Friday night, losing 1-0 in a hard fought match. With the loss, Villanova is now 1-1 in BIG EAST play.
The Owls struck early, finding the back of the net at the 11:22 mark of the first period. For Temple, they out shot the Wildcats each quarter, finishing with a total of 15 shots, with nine on goal. Villanova recorded two shots, both being on goal.
Sabine de Ruijter fired off the only two shots for Villanova. Her first shot at the 9:58 mark of the first quarter was saved by the Temple goalkeeper. Her second shot came at the 41:35 mark, which was also saved. The stout Temple defense held Villanova without a shot for the final 18:24 of the match.
Goalkeeper Jordan McGinley kept the ‘Cats in the game, recording eight saves, including five in the third period. In the third period alone, McGinely faced a total of 10 shots and six penalty corners. The eight saves ties a season high against Monmouth (9/10).
The Wilcats will travel to Fairfield University on Sunday, September 26 for their next match. The non-conference game will start at 1 PM.
