LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Coming off one of the best seasons in school history and the program’s first-ever NCAA appearance, the Villanova softball team was recognized this week for being just as successful in the classroom as it has been on the field. During a year in which the Wildcats won 37 games and a BIG EAST title Villanova ranked 17th among all Division I programs with a 3.68 grade-point average for the 2020-21 academic year. Head coach Bridget Orchard also had 17 of her student-athletes from the 2021 roster named Easton/NFCA Scholar-Athletes in the Association’s release of academic honors on Tuesday afternoon.

The NFCA recognizes Scholar-Athletes who have recorded a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the previous academic year. Among the 17 honorees from the Wildcats were each of the five student-athletes who were named All-BIG EAST performers during the 2021 season. That group included pitcher/designated player Paige Rauch, catchers Ryan Henry and Ally Jones, second baseman Angela Giampolo and shortstop Megan Kern.

Villanova’s list of scholar-athletes also included several 2021 seniors in Giampolo, Rauch, pitcher Anissa Amarillas, first baseman Julia DaCosta and outfielder Sarah Hangsleben. The honorees from the Wildcats also included outfielders Tess Cites, Dani Dabroski, Erin Gray and Sydney Hayes; infielders Olivia LaQua and Victoria Sebastian; catcher Emily Orr; and pitchers Sara Kennedy and Caroline Pellicano.

The individual honorees on the Easton/NFCA Scholar-Athlete squad and the annual team GPA rankings are submitted by member head coaches and recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across the Association’s membership categories. The list of Scholar-Athletes for 2020-21 marked the second consecutive year that there were more than 8,000 total honorees across all levels of NFCA membership.

Villanova posted a 3.68 team GPA in 2020-21 while going 37-15 (.712) to win its first BIG EAST title and advance to an NCAA regional for the first time in program history. Following the season every member of the 2020-21 roster earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and 18 student-athletes were selected to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the Spring 2021 semester.
