Villanova Rowing Has a Strong Performance at the Kelly Cup

Philadelphia, Pa.- In one of the programs traditional races the Villanova Wildcats had a successful day at the Kerr Cup. The Wildcats took on local competition in Drexel, Penn, Saint Joseph’s, La Salle, Temple, and Jefferson.

This race also marked senior day for the teams six seniors, Claire Kotwicki, Elizabeth Liedtka, Amanda Miller, Cecilia Spesia, Sydney Stepovich, and Muriel Thomas Clapp. “We appreciate everything they have given to the program and their leadership through the pandemic,” shared head coach Carissa Adams.

Adams shared, “the team has had a challenging academic load this week, but they have brought a persistent focus to practice every day. The team handled the conditions well and put-up strong performances against our city rivals.”

This showed in the opening varsity 8 race, with Villanova going up against La Salle, Penn, and Jefferson with the top two heading to the A finals to face the top two from the other heat of Saint Joseph’s, Drexel, and Temple. The Wildcats came in second in their heat with a 6:58.9 time advancing them to the A finals. The Quakers finished first with a 6:50.3 time after the Wildcats came Jefferson (7:00.6) and then La Salle (7:19.2).

In the varsity 8 boat the Wildcats was, Claire Humphrey, Amanda Miller, Kaitlin Urbanik, Mary Arnold, Cecilia Spesia, Gretta Horgan, Claire Barrett, Holly Hubbard, and Julia Ramsey. For the third varsity 8 race that followed Villanova had Zoe Barnes, Sofia Lopez, Elizabeth Liedtka, Emma Lovejoy, Tallulah Laska, Anna Flynn, Jadyn Ramos, Claire Kotwicki, and Abby Burns.

Villanova’s third varsity 8 boat finished in first place after the Temple Owls were disqualified moving them up from second. The Wildcats finished in 7:19.2 and beat out Drexel (7:42.5) and La Salle (7.56.1).

The varsity 4 boat of, Caroline Colgan, Caroline Shea, Fiona Fennessey, Annie Dudrear, and Mac O’Reilly, gave Villanova a fourth-place finish with a 7:59.2 time. Penn took home first (7:35.0) followed by Drexel (7:40.1) and then Temple (7:52.3). After Villanova finished St. Joseph’s (8:06.4) and Jefferson (8:38.1).

Villanova’s second varsity 8 boat finished with a 7:01.3 time to take home third. Drexel finished first (6:53.5) followed by Temple (6:56.3) and in fourth was Penn (7:03.0) and then St. Joseph’s (7:04.5).

Madeline McCarthy, Kara Dempsey, Sydney Stepovich ,Alexandra Petrozzi, Olivia Krause, Sarah Sarah Burghardt, Madison Burke, Erin Welch, and Muriel Thomas Clapp represented Villanova in the second varsity 8 race.

In the A finals of the Kelly Cup the Wildcats took on Temple, Drexel, and Penn. Villanova came in fourth in the finals with a 7:02.6 time. The Quakers took home first finishing in 6:44.1.

Villanova will now have two weeks to prepare of the CAA Championships in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on Sunday, May 16th.
